As a business, The Art Corner has to sell art supplies in order to keep its doors open bu,t it is oh so much more than that. The Art Corner is a place of refuge for those persons who need a creative outlet. It is a a place to hang out and talk 'art'. It is a place to ask questions and demo art products. It is a safe place for you to create without feeling embarressed or awkward. I have spoken with many customers who leave the store feeling inspired, feeling like they CAN just enjoy the process of creating without worrying about the end result.. I recently taught a student who's wife passed away a couple of years ago. We met once a week for a couple of hours for about 2 months. At his last class, he mentioned how therapeutic the classes had been for him and was thankful. We forget that the process of creating is more important than the result of our creativity. As the store continues to grow, my goal is to have a more hands on relationship with my community by offering community art projects, small group art excercises, one on one classes, and open studio time.
It's been 2 weeks since I got back from New Orleans for the SLS Sales Show and I can't wait for next year's show!. Nancy, fellow artist and owner of Art & Soul Gallery, and I spent 3 full days immersed in art supplies, learning about new product, and meeting new people. Because we were inside for all of the 3 days, SLS made sure we enjoyed ourselves after hours, and did we ever.
I am excited to implement the things and ideas learned at the show....revamping the store, initiating artist programs, stocking the store with new supplies, and much more.
